Visiting Nana

2026-10-11

Today is my grandpa’s birthday as well as what would have been his 21st anniversary with my nana. We visited her grave this morning, and I was happy to see how well-maintained it was. My grandpa visits her every Sunday.

Some of the headstones in the cemetery didn’t have death dates. That is because their owners haven’t died yet! What a strange feeling that must be, looking at your own headstone. But to know the person who you will spend eternity next to is quite the privilege, I’ll admit.

Some headstones looked like they hadn’t been visited for some time. I’ve never found that to be particularly sad. You die twice. Once as a person and once as a memory. Being forgotten is just as natural and inevitable as death.

The main thing I was reminded of while studying her headstone was her laugh. We laughed a lot during this trip. For instance, a picture of my dad in the ocean wearing tan swim trunks had us bent over with tears in our eyes. Some ways of remembrance are more subtle. A laugh is a great eulogy.
